<image:title>News - Moving Forward with Garden Expansion, Soup Kitchen Numbers Grow - Solar Water Pump</image:title>
<image:caption>Water is wealth, security, and life! April 25th brought solar panels and a solar-powered water pumping system. CSN Manager Belinda Tsuses reports the system is running “perfectly well” and automatically pumps water. This is a great time saver for Groundskeepers Zuma and Johannes, who are turning their efforts to other needed projects, such as expanding the gardens and making bricks for a new soup kitchen. The solar-powered pump also saves CSN petrol costs.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Moving Forward with Garden Expansion, Soup Kitchen Numbers Grow - Shade Netting/ Greenhouse Installed</image:title>
<image:caption>June brought the arrival of a new greenhouse. The shade netting/greenhouse is 2.5 m tall and 15m x 30m in size. Shown here is a winter crop of spinach. It is hoped that our CSN gardeners (Joel Zuma and Johannes Kafuru) will receive further assistance/instruction from the Ministry of Agriculture or a local farmers group. Excitingly, the planting of a citrus orchard is also underway.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Moving Forward with Garden Expansion, Soup Kitchen Numbers Grow - Soup Kitchen News</image:title>
<image:caption>Since this picture was taken last year, the number of children fed through CSN’s soup kitchen has swelled. CSN assists in fighting malnutrition in Drimiopsis, the constituency, and the region. Our agent in Namibia, Helge Mercker, reports, “The Omaheke region (where Drimiopsis is located) is declared as the highest rate of child malnutrition and child death due to starvation in the country. Thus, we will do all we can to help hungry children. At times, we have over 200 children coming for a meal three times per week.” Belinda Tsuses, the CSN Manager, reports 180+ children receive a regular soup kitchen meal three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. CSN is grateful to the Soup Kitchen volunteers who prepare the meal in large pots over an open fire. The drought in Southern Africa will affect 24 million people this year—the worst in 100 years. In April, the Governor’s office donated food to CSN, but food donations have been sporadic since then.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Moving Forward with Garden Expansion, Soup Kitchen Numbers Grow - A new Soup Kitchen Begins</image:title>
<image:caption>A new soup kitchen is planned to accommodate the increased number of children receiving a meal from the soup kitchen. The land has been cleared, and Zuma and Johannes have started making bricks for the structure, which will include a shaded area for the waiting children. CSN hopes to purchase a gas stove to replace the traditional way of gathering wood to cook over an open fire.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Left, children dancing at a community celebration of the opening of the Mother House. Lazarus Musambani, Director of the Omaruru Children’s Orphanage and CSN Board Member, selected 16 of the most vulnerable children from a possible 75 in Drimiopsis, to reside at the Mother House until age 18. His expertise with Ministry guidelines speeded up registering the Sanctuary as a Child Care Facility. With her two children, Belinda Tsuses was hired and moved into the house to become the resident Manager. Lazarus taught Belinda, Chief Ita, and the House Mothers, Viktoria and Katrina, many aspects of their roles. Belinda ensures that Ministry guidelines are followed. As a team under Belinda’s guidance, they provide loving care for the children who are now settled into their new home, enjoying food, shelter, and support in all aspects of life, including school. The youngest children attend Sanveld Kindergarten, while the older ones attend the local public school.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - August, 2022 News - Make it stand out</image:title>
<image:caption>In mid-March, there was a surprise visit by multiple ministries of marginalized communities who came to view the Drimiopsis settlement as a whole but they also came to the children’s home. The visitors included representatives from the Ministry of Gender Equality, Poverty Eradication & Social Welfare; World Food Program; World Health Organisation; National Planning Commission of Namibia; Nutrition and Food Security Alliance of Namibia; Food Bank of Namibia Co-ordinator Omaheke Region; and a Member from the Office of the President for marginalized communities. They asked many questions about the Mother House operation and conducted a thorough inspection visiting all the rooms, storage facilities, gardens, and grounds. Manager Belinda Tsuses reported, “they loved the place--they were very impressed by what they saw.” Spontaneously, the girls provided dance and entertainment for the visitors. This surprise visit included key contacts from the offices which whom Belinda needs to liaise with. What a wonderful start for our new manager! Hon Ignatius Kariseb, chairperson of the Omaheke Regional Council and Regional Councillor of the Kalahari Constituency, Omaheke Region, also visited the facility. He is the key Government person overseeing electrical power to the Mother House through the installation of a power pole. The Councillor met with Belinda to report the pole is close to being installed and work has started elsewhere in Drimiopsis. However, due to a shortage of needed materials that come from South African suppliers the work was halted temporarily. The Councilor expressed interest in supporting an orchard on the land. In April, visitors from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare collected pictures and information about CSN and the MH. They raised the possibility of establishing an Early Childhood Centre to be built on the Sanctuary land (all being part of CSN Children’s Village). They donated 10 packs of 20x500g instant porridge.</image:caption>

The 4-month program which started in June is an effort to fight malnutrition in vulnerable young children through the winter months. The program is financed by the World Food Program and Manager Belinda is an integral part of coordinating all efforts. <image:title>Projects - Mother House</image:title>
<image:caption>The “Mother House,” as it is affectionately known, is CSN’s registered residential childcare facility and is home to 20 of the most vulnerable children in Drimiopsis, along with their caregivers. CSNS is committed to raising funds to cover the orphanage’s ongoing operational costs, including meals, wages for a manager and 2.5 house mothers, wages for two groundskeepers, medical and school expenses, staff development, and other necessary resources. Your support is crucial to our success. CSNS fundraising contributed significantly to the construction of the building, which includes two dormitories (one for boys and the other for girls), a kitchen, dining room, meeting room, laundry facilities, showers, toilets, storage space, and office space. To learn more about the history and building of the Mother House, please visit the “News” section of the website.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Garden Project</image:title>
<image:caption>We see this project as twofold: enriching the children’s diet, which is deficient in most nutrients, and providing income to fund the gardens by selling excess produce to community members. CSNS provided funding to drill a borehole (well), purchase water tanks and stands, and install solar panels for a water pumping system. This essential water resource and the hiring of two groundsmen (a gardener/handyman and gardening assistant) made establishing Indigenous and vegetable gardens possible. The latest garden addition is a greenhouse or shade net 2.5 m x 30 m x 15 m in size. We are also excited to share that the development of an orchard is well underway.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Soup Kitchen</image:title>
<image:caption>The Omaheke region, where CSN is located, currently has the highest rate of child malnutrition in the country. Through its soup kitchen, CSN is making a significant difference in the lives of the children in Drimiopsis and the region. Over the past decade, with the help of a group of dedicated women volunteers, CSN has provided nutritious meals to 150-250 orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) two to three times a week. The volunteers prepare a meal of lentil soup, mealie meal, or rice in an outdoor kitchen on the Sanctuary Land. Recently, CSNS provided the funds needed to build a new structure for the soup kitchen. The new structure includes sinks, a toilet, and a shaded area where the village children can come for soup and kitchen meals. CSNS provides funding to buy food for the soup kitchen and to pay honoraria to its volunteers.</image:caption>

<image:title>Projects - Kindergarten Food Program</image:title>
<image:caption>CSNS provides the Sanveld Kindergarten with funds to buy and prepare two meals, five days per week, for up to 65 OVC who attend kindergarten classes. The successful Sanveld Kindergarten operates from 8 am to 1 pm weekdays. This project funds food supplies such as oatmeal, mealie pap, lentils, bread, peanut butter, wood for a cooking fire, water storage containers, and transportation costs for purchasing and delivering the food.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Florinda Goagoses, an experienced homework class teacher and literacy promoter, has been hired to provide a crucial after-school tutoring program for children who need extra help. This program is a lifeline for these children, providing them with the support they need to succeed. Florinda lives in Gobabis and travels to Drimiopsis four times a week to tutor our children at the Mother House. CSNS welcomes your donations to support this essential program, which helps cover Florinda’s modest monthly salary and transportation costs.</image:caption>
